Effectiveness of Microwave Energy as a Tool for Red Spider (Tetranychus urticae) Control and Their Side Effects on Some Vegetable Plants

Abstract

In many agricultural productions, especially in productions being performed at outdoors, the pests create negative effects. These cause losses even after harvest and sales as well as being effective during the production. In this study, it was aimed to reveal how the plant and Tetranychus urticae –that has economic harm against bean, cucumber and eggplant plants at greenhouses- will be affected when microwave energy is applied on the referred pest. With this purpose, first a testing apparatus was prepared, and the power of microwave energy by which the plants and pests are being affected, the exposure period to this power and distance of the system from the target was determined. During these studies, it was followed how these plants were being damaged. In the applications, the rate of death of pests and the rate of change of color and weight values of plants had showed an increase as the application period increase and as the application distance decrease. And increases were observed in the rate of change of all the measured values as the value of microwave power increase. But as there had been tears at specific points, especially at pedicle sections, the regularity of the measured values was deteriorated and irregular data was obtained.  When 700W power was applied on Tetranychus urticae from 15 cm distance for 20 seconds under laboratory conditions, 65±5.8% death rate was obtained.  By the end of the study, the power at the optimum point, distance and period values -where the plants were affected the least and the pests remained ineffective- were revealed.
