Abstract

Cocoa as an important cash crop in Nigeria requires shade at the seedling stage. The frequently used shade crop for cocoa is plantain. The output of this important shade crop has drastically reduced due to diminishing soil fertility and adverse effects of plant-parasitic nematodes. However, for maximum output of plantain, the soil upon which is planted must be given some treatments. This study evaluated the profitability level of plantain resulting from different soil treatments. The soil was treated with different levels of cured poultry litter and carbofuran. Plantain output from each of the soil treatments was analyzed using Benefit Cost Ratio (BCR) and Net Present Value (NPV). The result of the analysis showed that the BCR values for all the treatments were greater than 1 and the NPVs were positive. However, the highest profit was recorded when the soil is treated with poultry litter at 0.4 ton per hectare.  The study therefore recommended that for maximum plantain output, the soil must be treated with poultry litter at 0.4 ton per hectare.
